The Federal Register recently announced the publication of the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for Stage 2 of meaningful use (MU).

Start preparing today to meet the Stage 2 requirements of meaningful use.

On June 16, 2011 the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) received formal recommendations from the HIT Policy Committee on Stage 2 requirements for meaningful use of EHR technology. The final rule on these recommendations will be published this summer (2012). Stage 2 criteria will make changes to the scope and thresholds of Stage 1 meaningful use measures. The optional objectives in the Stage 1menu set are recommended to be mandatory in Stage 2.

The criteria are centered around furthering the exchange of health information and improving point-of-care in an advanced format. There are more robust requirements for e-prescribing and the incorporation of structured laboratory results. Streamlined transitions in care and improved interoperability among systems and providers will be met through the electronic transmission of patient care summaries.
